I fractured my 5th metatarsal on the 21st of august and i have had surgery on it and have been in a cast and back strap every since. I went to the hospital and got the cast taken off for good 5 days ago. the metal inside my foot and the scar doesn’t hurt, but it is my ankle that hurts more. are there any exercises i could do at home to help my foot/ankle fully recover?

To get flexibility and strength back, you need to extend the ankle. For now, find something to hold onto with both hands so that you can keep your balance easily. Start with both feet flat on the floor and then lift up onto your toes. Hold that position for a few seconds, then lower back down to the floor. That will help with the initial strength. Once it starts to show improvement (it shouldn’t take too long) then I would suggest either stairs or something that allows you to step up and down like a cinder block. The muscles in your calf will build up nicely if you use those two exercises.

When it comes to lifting your foot upwards, there really isn’t much call for strength in that movement. Just sitting watching TV, you can pull the foot upwards, hold for a few seconds and then let it relax. As long as you can lift it up so that it’s not dragging when you walk, that’s all you really need to do.

For the side to side movement, that one doesn’t really need too much help. As long as you’re walking and using the stepping motions, the small muscles that stabilize your foot for side to side movement will build up on their own.

I would recommend Advil while doing this. After taking off a cast, exercise will leave the area sore for a while. If your ankle is a bit sore while walking, use a simple Ace Bandage to wrap around the ankle once or twice. It doesn’t seem like much, but it helps a lot. I shattered my ankle years ago, and while it was healing (and even now on bad days) the loops add a lot of strength and balance. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to get it back to full strength. I’ve broken tons of bones, and they can take a long time to heal. If you think you have any nerve damage, take a B complex vitamin with dinner each day and it will greatly speed up the nerve regeneration. Considering that it’s a metatarsal, you probably don’t, but I thought I’d add that just in case.
